Wouldn’t it be nice to know if you get what you are paying for?  Try this website's college rating system.

A word of caution:  Some offers of financial aid advice come with a price.  Here is what we have learned about EdiFi College Financial Aid Services. On one blog there were lots of complaints.  Some claim to have benefited to the ratio of $12,000 for $800 cost.  Apparently people are encouraged to sign contracts after the free seminar.  The company then does the FAFSA and other scholarship paperwork for the family.  No refunds are allowed, you cannot back out of a contract.  It may work, but an F rating is not confidence building.  The company refutes this by saying it has thousands of satisfied customers and only 150 or so registered complaints.  No government action is pending.  I guess they do the paperwork for busy or confused people and thus do provide a service for a fee.  Here are some BBB reports.

If you see something you are interested in drop me a note or visit the URLs listed there.  Start making contact with the financial aid offices of the school(s) you are most interested in.  Establish a relationship.  Talk to the department of the majors you are interested in.  They won’t be able to finalize anything with you until they have the FAFSA, but you will be ahead of the game for consideration of that school’s financial aid pot.
Speaking of the FAFSA, click below for information on this essential document.

Special Note 2: Here is a website that lets colleges know what you are looking for and gets them in contact with you.  Although it is not about scholarships, check this one out!    http://www.cappex.com/index.jsp
Special Note 3:  I start sending Cal Grant GPA verifications as soon as I can, last school year it was early December.  I start with the highest GPA students and work my way down through the list as long as I have your social security number.  If I don’t have it, I come to find you.  The verification is sent electronically to the Cal Grant site.  We have not used hard copy forms for 5 years now.  Please do not bring paper copies from the financial aid offices in to be filled out as this just slows down the process.  I can provide you with the date I upload your gpa to the state.  I am now using Naviance to notify you when I sent the gpa verification to the state.  I’m also using it to ask you for your social security number if you have not provided it to the school.  Therefore, it is to your advantage to leave an e-mail address for the school.  You can create your own account on WebGrants for Students and check 24/7 on application status, manage awards, update address, view payment history, file a school change, or leave of absence using this address: www.webgrants4Students.org

You can drop me a note for confirmation if you prefer.  Remember only 10th and 11th grade courses are included in the average. PE and remedial classes (classes taken in 10-11grade that make up for 9th grade classes) are dropped and all grades are changed to a four point scale regardless of honors status.  A weighted average is used if any of your grades did not receive 5 semester credits, but we are now trying to align college credits with LAB’s credits to eliminate this problem.

Special Note 4:  You’ve been accepted to several colleges and received financial aid packages from them.  If all else was equal, you would want to compare the net cost to you for each school.  Net cost = Total cost of attendance minus all grants and all scholarships.  Do not include loans or work study in this calculation.
Special Note 5:  Are you interested in possible income tax savings related to education?  Try the Hope and Lifetime Learning credits.  You can only take one of these in a tax year but the amounts have been recently increased.

AnatomyProf

Black Male Teachers Do you know any Black males who are seniors in high school who want to go to college out of state for  'FREE' ? Several Black Colleges are looking for future black male teachers and will send them to universities/colleges for 4 years FREE.  The 'Call Me MISTER' program is an effort to address the critical shortage of African American male teachers particularly among South Carolina 's lowest performing public schools. Program participants are selected from among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk communities.  The Call Me MISTER program combines the special strengths and resources of Clemson University with the individualized instructional programs offered by four historically black colleges in South Carolina : Benedict College , Claflin University , Morris College and South Carolina State University . To provide even greater opportunity and access, students have the option of first attending one of our two-year partner colleges before transferring to one of the four-year institutions to complete their baccalaureate degree. In addition, the project has limited enrollment in the middle school Master of Art in Teaching program. Please click on the participating schools on the menu to the left to learn more about these schools' programs.

  • Multiple submissions are not allowed and we accept only one essay per entrant

Submit your essay telling us and your peers about where you went and what it meant to you, what worked and what didn't work, what you learned from the trip, or how it changed you. Bring other travelers into the world you visited. It can be funny, serious, contemplative, whatever... as long as it's informative.  Essays will be judged on originality, quality of expression, and a sense of place.

Application forms can be obtained at this site.
