Text Box: 2010 Ron Banes Science, Medical, Engineering scholarship : Congratulations to Nick Collins for winning $1000 nonrenewable, and Megan Wright for winning the 4 year renewable $1000 scholarships. Well done!
We have 4 former students who have won $1000 scholarships. One of those has renewed his $1000 scholarship for the third year. Mr. Banes has expressed his strong desire to continue this award on into the future.

SmartBoards are now installed in all 5 science rooms (106, 107, 108, 109 and 110).  All have the SynchronEyes, Notebook, Bluetooth, Smart Conceptmaker, Senteo (Smart Response) software installed.

12 upgraded laptops for room 107 are now locked in and loaded for action.  The streaming video, online texts and AP help site ideas did not pan out as sustainable.  More robot, airplane wing and CO2 racing gear will finish out our grant. A Tecnix basic robot with a radio controller made the final cut.

Our first LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot was completed on 13 November and LABRobo 1 beeped its first words.  It then almost drove itself off the countertop!  Software and manuals are now installed on the room 106 desktop for the Mindstorm robots.  LABRobo2 has arrived from over Christmas thanks to Rebecca’s hard work. The AP physics class added some music programs to LABRobo 1 before they left.  More programming and assembly is to come this summer.  We hope to do some a-Mazing things with these robots.  They can be equipped with color, touch, IR, sound, RFID tags, compass, gyro, magnetic sensors and we have the adapters for a whole range of Vernier CBL probes.

In order to figure out how to use the department’s Garmin Vista gps receiver I took it on vacation two summers ago (2008).  We went from Toelle, Utah to Colorado Springs, Denver, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Flaming Gorge, Wy/Ut and back to Tooele.  Our stops included the Mollie Kathleen gold mine 1000 feet below Cripple Creek Co and Pike’s Peak, 14,110 feet above sea level.  I stopped at waypoints, acquired the satellites and got longitude/latitude readings along with altitude.  These were then transferred to the waypoint manager software that came with the gps and also to Vernier’s Logger Pro software. LoggerPro allows data export to Google Earth or other GIS programs.  I exported to Google Earth and got waypoints on a satellite view and map view.  Finally, my son and I scaled “as the crow flies” distances between waypoints and the vertical changes and placed this into a profile graph.  This is now available for earth science and physical science.  WAY cool!
